We’ve moved! That’s right, we have left our home state of West Virginia.
If you’ve been reading my blog for awhile, you may remember me talking about us wanting to move to South Carolina sometime in the future. Well, Mike got the opportunity to transfer to a store in Charleston, S.C. and we decided to bite the bullet and take the plunge. We rented a Uhaul, packed it full and headed down south. Mike drove the Uhaul and I followed in his truck with the 3 cats, who did surprisingly great during the entire 9 hour trip. Raven won’t be moving down until sometime in May when her current college semester is finished.
This is an exciting and sometimes scary adventure. Especially leaving an area that we have lived in all or most of our lives to start fresh in an area where we have no family or friends and don’t even know anyone. But you only live once and I would hate to go through our whole lives living in an area that we didn’t love anymore just because we were too scared to take the risks.
We’re a mere 18 miles from the beach and are currently renting a lovely town home. It kinda sucks when I think that we are now paying rent when we just got our house paid off last year. But we really were not happy in that area. Drugs (heroin, meth and pain pills) has crippled our home state, turning it into a depressing and unpleasant place. In fact, drugs are killing so many people in West Virginia that the state can’t keep up with the funerals! Add on top of that the cost of living was rather high especially if you compared it with the meager job opportunities and that the activities available were few and far between. It’s actually pretty sad when I think back on how much I use to love West Virginia, thinking that I would never move out of state. But in recent years, the wild and wonderful West Virginia that I grew up in has become a shell of its former self.
Anyway, we’re renting temporarily, don’t know for how long, until we figure out if this is where we want to stay or if there is another area we would rather call home. We still need to sell our house back home but, at the moment at least, I think we made the right decision. I don’t know if I will still feel this way after months of living here, but I am really enjoying it at the moment. The weather is amazing and there is so much to do!
One of the things we love about our new home is the amount of deer that we get in our back yard. Even when London is outside using the bathroom, the deer are not too afraid to make themselves known. They seem to know how far London’s leash can go and stay out of his reach. Not that London would do anything but lick them if they would get close enough. Heck, I would wager that if the deer decided to rush London, he would turn tail and come running back inside as fast as he can. Throughout the day, it is not an uncommon sight to see 10 or more deer in our back yard eating apples and chestnuts from the trees.
Anyway, tonight is the homecoming dance and Raven is going. Actually, we are forcing her to go. She doesn’t like wearing dresses or dancing because it’s too girly but we tried to tell her that she will regret not going to school dances when she gets old. She has more than a few friends going so she will have some people to hang out with. When I took her dress shopping a few weeks ago, she actually enjoyed it more than I thought she would. This will be her first dance and I think I am more excited about it then she is!
So, I am just finally getting around to posting photos of the house. Yes, it will be a month of use living here in a few days and we still haven’t gotten everything out of boxes but I am working on it.
Before posting the pictures I will give you some info on the house. It was built in 1920 and has 2 bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, living room, computer room, basement, attic and a 2 car detached garage. So far, we love it! We still have work to do to it. For example, summer 2012 we want to build a new front porch and replace the back porch roof. Anyway, here are some pictures of the house. I will upload new ones as we progress on the house.
MINE & MIKE’S ROOM
I don’t have any before pictures of the bathroom mainly because a. I forgot to take a before picture and b. All we really did to it was change the paint color. It was originally pink and we painted it blue. I also don’t have any of the computer room at this moment.
Thanks to Mike’s dad letting us borrow his trailer we have gotten most of our stuff over to the new house. We have been living in it since Thursday and (so far) are loving it. Even the animals (Jedi, Nefarian and London) seem to enjoy having a house to run around in instead of being cooped up in one room. Mike is taking the trailer back to his Dad’s today and even though it was a Godsend to use it, it was a pain in the rear to drive with. Even though it was only a 12 foot trailer, it feel like you were rv towing or something. Plus, it eats up the gas in Mike’s Explorer pretty fast. Anyway, this is just a quick update, and I will (hopefully) post a real blog post later today with pictures.
